10th March 2020

As the spread of the virus is expected to reach its peak within the next two weeks it’s highly advisable that employers and businesses have contingency plans in place to minimise the spread of infection and absenteeism.

Today the government published an update on the guidance that will assist employers and businesses in providing advice to their staff on:

  • The novel coronavirus, COVID-19
  • How to help prevent spread of all respiratory infections including COVID-19
  • What to do if someone suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 has been in business settings
  • What advice to give to individuals who have travelled to specific areas
  • Actions to take if staff come into contact with someone who is self-isolating or is a possible or confirmed case of COVID-19

In the Workplace

There are several things you can do today to help reduce the spread of the virus and hopefully you have procedures in place already including:

  1. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze. See Catch it, Bin it, Kill it
  2. Put used tissues in the bin straight away
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available. See hand washing guidance
  4. Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  5. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
  6. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
