Changing from Company Sick Pay to Statutory Sick pay

Most employers consider alternative ways to reduce costs and improve attendance levels. One approach which you may consider is to change the Company sick pay to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). This could also be considered a positive action in advance of considering redundancies to reduce overall company costs.

Depending on the wording of any discretionary or clearly defined Company sick pay scheme, employees would be consulted of the proposed change and advised of the expected date of change. Reasonable notice would be given from when the change is due to come into effect and employees can raise any questions they have during the notice period.

Employees would then be eligible for Statutory Sick Pay, and details of how this applies would be provided to them. It is always advisable to state clearly in the contract of employment / sick pay policy that the Company sick pay scheme is discretionary and can be withdrawn at any time.
